Band review/recommendation - One OK Rock

The band in which I will be writing about in my blog is the Japanese punk band, One OK Rock. this is a band whom I've discovered and had a large interest in within the last year. I have a strong interest in Asian culture and came across them when I was when I was watching the trailer for the movie Rurouni Kenshin, where the single Mighty Long Fall was the soundtrack. From there I just followed the suggested video feed on Youtube and realized that this was a band whose music I thoroughly enjoyed.

Their style is not that of your typical J-Rock band, but more of a focus on the American punk rocker style. The song Liar is very reminiscent of an early 2000's Linkin Park with a strong emphasis on steady guitar riffs and a powerful chorus, here you can clearly see the bands American punk influences.

The band debuted in 2007 and enjoyed much success with their debut song Naihi Shinsho coming in at 48 on the Oricon chart. Since their debut the band has released 7 albums and enjoyed a lot of good fortune with the album 35xxxv coming in at number 17 on the Billboard Heatseekers Albums, a chart for up and coming artists.

If you enjoy the music of bands like Fall Out Boy, My Chemical Romance or You Me At Six then I'm sure you would enjoy the music of One OK Rock. If you're thinking that you may not like to listen to music in another language there's no need to worry as their latest album 35xxxv(deluxe edition) is labelled as an American release and is mostly in English, with only the occasional verse in Japanese to maintain some of their usual feel. The band is currently touring and have recently played in Dublin, Ireland.

Their latest release Last Dance is a turn away from their traditional punk roots and touches on their ballad side. It's a very refreshing melody with strong vocals from the lead singer Taka and great rhythm from the guitarist Toru and bassist Ryota.

If you're looking for something new with a familiar feel then I highly recommend One Ok Rock as their mix of the Japanese and English language through punk music makes for an incredibly enjoyable audible experience. The group is becoming incredibly popular outside of Japan now and you may soon see them pop up on your television screen or on the radio.
